NYNAME president

A message from the President,

This year, for the first time, NYNAME and NYCMA held their respective conferences at the same place and at the same time. While the planning stages were often long and tedious, the incredible opportunities for cooperative training and interaction were well worth the effort.

I have always believed that advertising departments and circulation departments are both sales departments with similar needs and similar challenges. Many of the attendees chose to attend a workshop for circulation even though they are ad directors and vice versa.

NYNAME and NYCMA have both always offered their respective member newspapers opportunities for growth: both in individual knowledge and personal growth, as well as in revenue generation for their member newspapers. I sincerely believe these joint conferences and interactions can only guarantee success in the careers of the member employees and the overall health and welfare of the newspaper industry.

It became apparent to me during one of the joint sessions that there was more knowledge and newspaper selling and circulating skills in that one room than probably anyplace else on the planet. As I overheard members discussing common challenges and watched as people everywhere wrote notes of things “to do” when they returned to their newspapers I could not think of a worthwhile expenditure of ANY newspaper in New York than to send some of its employees to a conference like this. I know, I brought home half a dozen “great ideas” that will easily make my newspaper ten times the cost of my NYNAME dues and the price of the conference.

I also know, my publisher will want ten times plus three percent, but fortunately, I am so charged up from a few days in Saratoga Springs that I am very ready for the challenge.
